Licensed Music Therapist
in Maryland
If you are a clinician, care coordinator, healthcare administrator, or organization looking to refer patients to a licensed music therapist in Maryland — or to build a rhythm-based music therapy program — you have found the right person.
Jason Armstrong Baker is a Licensed Professional Music Therapist (LPMT) and Music Therapist – Board Certified (MT-BC) based in Baltimore, MD. With over 30 years of percussive artistry, more than 5,000 group drumming sessions facilitated, and a peer-reviewed study published in the Nordic Journal of Music Therapy, Jason brings a rare combination of clinical rigor, institutional credibility, and genuine human warmth to every setting he works in.
His work is recognized by Johns Hopkins Center for Music & Medicine, the Veterans Affairs Administration, The Baltimore Station, and Towson University. He is available for individual referrals, group programs, organizational partnerships, and clinical consultations across Maryland and virtually nationwide.
Evidence-based music therapy
Jason specializes in neurologic music therapy for people living with Parkinson's disease and Huntington's disease. His Rx for Rhythm program, a free weekly drumming group sponsored by Johns Hopkins Center for Music & Medicine, has served patients across Maryland and nationally via virtual sessions for several years.
In 2024, Jason co-authored a peer-reviewed study in the Nordic Journal of Music Therapy alongside Dr. Alexander Pantelyat, director of Johns Hopkins Center for Music & Medicine, demonstrating measurable motor improvements in Parkinson's patients after twice-weekly group drumming sessions over 12 weeks.
Rx for Rhythm is available virtually every Monday at 3pm ET, and in-person in Baltimore every Tuesday at 3pm ET. Referrals are welcome and care partners always attend at no cost.
Mental Health & Wellness
Rhythm-based music therapy is an evidence-based intervention for stress reduction, emotional regulation, mood disorders, trauma recovery, and social isolation. Jason works with individuals and groups seeking mental health and wellness support, incorporating percussion and music-making into a structured therapeutic framework tailored to each person's goals.
Available for individual referrals, group therapy programs, and organizational wellness initiatives across Maryland.
Veterans & Community Populations
Jason has a longstanding relationship with The Baltimore Station — a residential recovery and support program for veterans — and has worked extensively with the Veterans Affairs Administration. He brings trauma-informed, culturally responsive music therapy practice to veteran populations and underserved communities across Maryland.
Senior Living & Rehabilitation Settings
Music therapy is one of the most well-documented interventions for improving quality of life in older adults, reducing agitation, improving memory recall, supporting physical rehabilitation, and fostering social connection. Jason is available to partner with senior living communities, rehabilitation centers, and memory care facilities across Maryland to design and deliver music therapy programming appropriate for their residents and patients.
Why refer to a board-certified music therapist?
Not all music-based programs are the same. The MT-BC credential — issued by the Certification Board for Music Therapists — requires a bachelor's degree or higher in music therapy, supervised clinical internship hours, and a national board examination. The LPMT license adds a Maryland state-issued professional credential on top of that.
When you refer a patient or partner with Jason, you are working with a clinician who meets the same professional standards you hold yourself — documented, accountable, and grounded in evidence.
Partnership & referral options
Jason works with healthcare organizations across Maryland in several ways:
Individual referrals — refer a patient directly to Jason's existing programs or for individual music therapy sessions. Jason works with referring clinicians to align goals and report on outcomes.
Group program development — partner with Jason to design and deliver a recurring music therapy group program for your patient population, residents, or community.
Staff wellness programs — bring rhythm-based music therapy to your clinical staff as part of a burnout prevention or wellness initiative.
Research collaboration — Jason is open to collaborative research with Maryland healthcare institutions. His existing Johns Hopkins partnership demonstrates his capacity and commitment to rigorous work.
